Application Timeline — Step by Step

Follow these steps in order to submit a complete, competitive scholarship application.

1
Read the official prospectus

Download the AIOU Autumn 2026 prospectus from aiou.edu.pk and read the PhD scholarship section carefully — eligibility, subject-wise seats, and department-specific research areas differ by program.

2
Shortlist your subject and confirm eligibility

Match your MS/MPhil qualification and CGPA against one of the 12 available PhD fields (Islamic Studies, Computer Science, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, and more), and confirm you meet the age limit and HEC criteria.

3
Prepare your research proposal

Draft a research proposal tied to your target department's active research areas. A well-scoped, original proposal is one of the strongest levers in the merit evaluation.

4
Apply online at fmbp.aiou.edu.pk

New applicants submit the online admission form together with scanned documents through the FMBP portal (fmbp.aiou.edu.pk) before the closing date. Continuing AIOU students register courses via the CMS portal at enrollment.aiou.edu.pk.

5
Pay the admission fee and submit originals

Generate and pay the fee challan as instructed in the prospectus, then submit/verify original documents with your department or the Main Campus admission office as required.

6
Sit the PhD entry test

Attempt the entry test for your subject group on its scheduled date — Arabic & Islamic Studies (Aug 21, 2026), Education (Aug 24, 2026), Social Sciences & Humanities (Aug 27, 2026), or Sciences (Aug 28, 2026).

7
Attend the interview / merit review

Shortlisted candidates are called for a departmental interview where the research proposal, academic record, and (if any) publications are reviewed to finalise the merit list for the fully funded seats.

8
Confirm scholarship award and residency

Selected scholars accept the offer, confirm relocation to AIOU's Main Campus in Islamabad, and begin receiving the Rs. 80,000 monthly stipend alongside full tuition coverage.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

These are the most frequent reasons strong candidates get rejected or miss the deadline.

Submitting a generic research proposal that doesn't align with the specific department's active research areas.

Applying with a CGPA below 3.5/4.0 and assuming it will be waived — the scholarship threshold is separate from general PhD admission and is applied strictly.

Missing the FMBP online submission deadline because required documents (transcripts, NOC, reference letters) weren't ready in advance.

Not checking the exact entry test date for the correct subject group, resulting in a missed test slot.

Assuming the scholarship is need-based — it is strictly merit-based, evaluated on CGPA, research proposal quality, and entry test/interview performance.

Overlooking the residency requirement — applicants who cannot relocate to AIOU's Main Campus for the stipend period are not eligible, since this is a residential award.

Forgetting to attest photocopies of degrees/transcripts before submission, which can delay verification.

How to Apply — FAQs

Where do I apply for the AIOU PhD scholarship?

New applicants apply online through the FMBP portal at fmbp.aiou.edu.pk. Continuing AIOU students register their courses via the CMS portal at enrollment.aiou.edu.pk.

Do I apply for admission and the scholarship separately?

No — you apply for PhD admission and the scholarship together through the same FMBP application. Meeting the additional scholarship eligibility criteria (CGPA, age, research proposal) determines whether you're considered for the fully funded seat.

What happens after I submit my FMBP application?

Your application and documents are reviewed against HEC and AIOU criteria, after which eligible candidates are called to sit the subject-wise PhD entry test, followed by a departmental interview to finalise the scholarship merit list.

Can I edit my application after submission?

The official AIOU prospectus specifies the correction window, if any, for submitted forms. As a rule, review every field and document carefully before final submission to avoid needing corrections.

Is there an application fee?

Yes, a standard admission processing fee applies, payable via the challan or online payment method specified in the Autumn 2026 prospectus. This is separate from the PhD program's tuition fee, which is waived for scholarship recipients.
