Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) is Pakistan's largest university by enrollment and offers over 200 programs from Matric to PhD. The admission process is straightforward once you know the steps. This 2026 guide walks you through everything.
Step-by-Step AIOU Admission Process
Visit aiou.edu.pk and browse programs by level (Matric, FA/Intermediate, BA/B.Com, B.Ed, Masters, PhD). Each program page shows eligibility requirements, total credit hours, duration, and fee structure. Choose a program that matches your educational background and career goals.
Verify your eligibility for the chosen program. Matric (10th grade) requires Primary to 8th grade completion. FA/Intermediate requires Matric. BA requires Intermediate. Masters requires Bachelor degree. Programs like B.Ed have additional teaching service requirements. Foreign qualifications require HEC equivalency.
Download the current semester prospectus from the AIOU website. The prospectus contains: complete program list with fee schedules, course codes, tutor allocation process, and examination information. Also download the admission form for your program category.
Pay the admission fee at any branch of HBL, MCB, UBL, or Allied Bank using the bank challan from the prospectus. Keep the bank-stamped challan — you will need it for form submission. Online payment is also available through the admission portal.
Complete the admission form online (admission.aiou.edu.pk) or in writing. Required information: personal details (name, CNIC, DOB), educational background, program and course selections, regional campus selection, and payment details.
Required documents: attested photocopies of all educational certificates and mark sheets, CNIC photocopy, 2 passport photographs, bank payment challan. For online submission: scan and upload clear JPG/PDF copies.
Submit online through the AIOU admission portal or physically to your nearest regional campus. Keep a photocopy of the complete application. Online submission generates an application tracking number — save it for follow-up.
Check admission status at admission.aiou.edu.pk using your application number or CNIC. Admission confirmation typically takes 2-4 weeks. Upon confirmation, you receive your enrollment number which is used for all future communication with AIOU.
Important AIOU Admission Tips for 2026
Apply early — AIOU admission seats are limited for some programs and fill up. Applying in the first week of the admission window gives you the best chance.
Choose your regional campus carefully — it determines your tutor allocation and examination centre location. Select the campus nearest to your home city.
Select courses wisely — review course descriptions before selection. In your first semester, do not overload. 3-4 courses is ideal for new students adjusting to distance learning.
Keep all documents — maintain a file with all AIOU correspondence, fee receipts, enrollment confirmation, and form submissions. You will need them for future processes.
Join AIOU student groups — Facebook groups and WhatsApp communities for your program and semester year are invaluable for sharing information, assignment tips, and exam schedules.
