Understanding the AIOU Assignment & Tutorial System
Why Assignments Matter — 30% of Your Final Grade
At Allama Iqbal Open University, assignments are not a formality — they carry 30% of the total marks for most courses (20% in some programs). The remaining 70% comes from the final examination. This means a student who consistently performs well in assignments enters the examination hall with a significant pre-built cushion. Conversely, zero or very low assignment marks make it nearly impossible to achieve a distinction grade even with a perfect exam performance.
AIOU was established in 1974 with a mandate to bring education to people who cannot attend traditional universities. The assignment system was designed from the beginning to replace daily classroom interaction. Your tutor reads your assignments, provides written feedback, and uses them to gauge whether you have studied the course material properly. This feedback loop is the substitute for face-to-face teaching in Open Distance Learning.
What Is Included in the Assignment Schedule PDF?
The AIOU assignment schedule PDF for each program group is a multi-page document that contains several critical pieces of information for students. First, it lists every active course code for the semester along with its title. Second, for each course it specifies two submission deadlines — one for Assignment 1 and one for Assignment 2. Third, it includes the corresponding tutorial dates grouped by region. Fourth, it identifies the workshop schedule for programs like B.Ed and ADE where face-to-face workshops are mandatory components.
Students are strongly advised to download their program-specific schedule PDF within the first week of the semester and mark every relevant deadline in a personal planner or phone calendar. AIOU does not send individual reminder messages to students before assignment deadlines.
Tutorial vs. Workshop — What Is the Difference?
Many AIOU students are confused by the terms "tutorial" and "workshop" in the schedule. Tutorials are small-group sessions (typically 15–25 students) where a tutor explains difficult portions of the course book, answers student questions, and returns marked assignment copies. They are usually held at a regional study centre or tutor's designated venue every two to four weeks. For most traditional programs (Matric, FA, BA), tutorial attendance is not compulsory but is highly beneficial.
Workshops, on the other hand, are intensive multi-day sessions primarily associated with professional teacher-training programs such as B.Ed, ADE, and M.Ed. Workshops for these programs must be attended to earn attendance marks, which are a prerequisite for sitting the final examination. The workshop schedule is program-specific and varies by region — refer to the PDF for your exact dates.
How AIOU Assignment Submission Works (Step-by-Step)
- Download the question paper from aiou.edu.pk/assignments-qp using your course code and semester.
- Study the relevant units from the official AIOU course book before writing your answers.
- Write answers in your own words. Each answer should be detailed, referenced to specific units/chapters, and ideally 300–500 words per long question.
- Attach an Assignment Covering Form (available for download on the question paper page) filled with your name, roll number, course code, program, and tutor's name.
- Submit via the AIOU student portal at aiou.edu.pk by uploading scanned pages, or mail a physical copy to your regional office — whichever method your program requires.
- Check the receipt status on the student portal 5–7 working days after submission.
Program-Wise Schedule Breakdown
Matric (SSC) Programme
The Matric schedule covers 9th and 10th grade courses in both General (Arts/Science) and Dars-e-Nizami streams. Assignment deadlines are the same across all regional centres. Tutorials are offered by tutor-marked study guides and the schedule lists the dates when tutors hold sessions at study centres. There are typically 2 assignments per course per semester.
F.A / I.COM / F.Sc (HSSC) Programme
The F.A schedule includes Higher Secondary courses across General, I.COM, and Dars-e-Nizami streams. Students preparing for AIOU Matric and F.A exams are among the most numerous at the university, and the schedule PDF for these programs is the most widely downloaded. Tutorials are especially important for science and mathematics courses where practice under guidance makes a significant difference.
BA / Associate Degree / Certificate Courses
The BA / Associate Degree schedule is the most comprehensive. It covers hundreds of course codes spread across BA General, B.COM, and all specializations of the two-year Associate Degree programme (Mass Communication, Business Administration, Urdu, English, Pakistan Studies, History, Library Sciences, Gender Studies, Sociology, and more). Certificate courses for short-term professional qualifications are also included.
BS / B.Ed / BBA / PGD / MA / M.Ed Programmes
This is the most complex schedule, covering all four-year BS programs across social sciences, languages, Islamic studies, education, computer science, and business. B.Ed programmes (1.5, 2.5, and 4-year ODL) have both assignment deadlines and mandatory workshop dates in this schedule. Post-Graduate Diploma (PGD), Masters (MA, MSc), M.Ed, MBA, and M.COM programmes are all included. Students in these programs should pay particular attention to workshop attendance requirements.
Autumn 2026 Assignment Schedule
The Autumn semester at AIOU runs from October 2026 to February/March 2027. Admission for Autumn opens in July 2026, and assignment schedules for Autumn are published in September 2026 at aiou.edu.pk. Assignment 1 for Autumn is typically due in November, and Assignment 2 in January. This page will be updated with Autumn 2026 PDFs as soon as AIOU releases them. 6 Tips to Never Miss an AIOU Assignment Deadline
Thousands of AIOU students lose marks every semester due to missed or rejected assignments. These six practices will help you stay on track.
Download Your Schedule on Day 1
As soon as the semester begins, download the schedule PDF for your program and mark every deadline in your phone calendar with a 1-week advance reminder. AIOU does not send personal reminders to students — it is entirely your responsibility to track dates.
Submit Before the Last Date, Not On It
AIOU servers and regional offices experience extremely high load on deadline days. Students who submit online even a few minutes late get their assignment rejected. Aim to submit at least 3 days before the printed deadline to guarantee acceptance.
Verify Receipt — Screenshot the Confirmation
After submitting on the AIOU portal, always take a screenshot of the submission confirmation page showing your roll number, course code, and timestamp. Save this as proof of submission in case of any dispute later.
Understand the Tutorial Attendance Requirement
For Matric, FA, and BA programs, tutorial attendance may be mandatory for exam eligibility. Check your individual course guidelines carefully. Missing tutorials in B.Ed ODL programs can disqualify you from the final examination for that course.
Do Not Submit Identical Assignments
AIOU tutors mark hundreds of papers. Submitting a copy of someone else's assignment — even with minor edits — is detected and results in zero marks. Write answers in your own words using the official course book as your primary source.
Keep a Physical Copy Before Submission
Scan or photograph each page of your handwritten assignment before mailing or uploading it. If the university fails to receive your submission, you will need this copy to re-submit or dispute.
