What Are AIOU Assignment Question Papers?
AIOU assignment question papers are the official unsolved question booklets that AIOU publishes at the start of each semester for every active course. Each paper contains the complete set of questions that students must answer in writing to earn their assignment marks. These marks — typically 30% of the total course marks — are added to examination performance to calculate the final grade.
Unlike traditional universities where assignments are essay prompts given by a professor, AIOU's question papers are printed documents created by course faculty at the university. They are standardised nationally, meaning every student enrolled in a given course code receives the same questions regardless of their location. Papers are updated each semester — Spring papers differ from Autumn papers for the same course.
Structure of AIOU Assignment Papers
Each assignment paper follows a consistent format that students should understand before writing:
Multiple choice questions (MCQs) worth 1 mark each. Some courses have 10–20 MCQs. These test factual recall from specific units in the course book.
Short-answer questions worth 3–5 marks each. Require 50–150 word answers. Test understanding of key concepts, definitions, and explanations.
Essay-type questions worth 10–20 marks. Require 300–600 word answers. Test analytical thinking, application of concepts, and depth of knowledge.
Assignment 1 vs. Assignment 2 — What Is the Difference?
Every AIOU course in a semester has two separate assignment papers — Assignment 1 and Assignment 2. They cover different units from the course book. Assignment 1 typically covers the first half of the course (Units 1–4 or 1–5), while Assignment 2 covers the second half (Units 5–9 or 6–9). The split varies by course, so check the question paper instructions carefully.
Both assignments must be submitted separately before their respective deadlines (refer to the Assignment Schedule page). Marks from both are combined before being added to your exam marks. Failing to submit either assignment results in zero marks for that assignment.
How to Find Your Question Paper by Course Code
- Go to aiou.edu.pk/assignments-qp
- Select Semester Spring 2026 from the semester dropdown
- Choose your program group (SSC/HSSC or Bachelor/PG) from the available links
- On the search page, enter your 4-digit course code (e.g., 9384, 0401)
- The system will display available papers — click to download Assignment 1 or Assignment 2
If your course code does not appear, check if you are enrolled in the correct semester or contact your regional office. Some newly introduced courses may have papers available only in printed form from the study centre.
How AIOU Tutors Mark Your Assignments
Understanding marking criteria helps you write better answers. AIOU tutors assess five core dimensions when marking:
| Marking Criterion | Weight | What the Tutor Checks |
|---|---|---|
| Subject Knowledge & Accuracy | 35% | Correct understanding of course book content, use of key concepts, accurate facts |
| Relevance to the Question | 25% | Answer directly addresses what was asked; no irrelevant padding |
| Depth & Detail of Answer | 20% | Sufficient elaboration, examples from the course book, supported arguments |
| Language & Expression | 10% | Clear written Urdu or English (per course), correct grammar, legible handwriting |
| Format & Presentation | 10% | Covering form attached, question numbers clearly marked, neat layout |
What Tutors Look For (Positive)
- ✓Clear, structured answers with an introduction, body, and conclusion for long questions
- ✓Direct reference to specific units or chapters from the AIOU course book
- ✓Use of correct technical terminology taught in the course
- ✓Well-organized headings and sub-headings in essay answers
- ✓Relevant real-world examples that illustrate the concept
- ✓Logical progression of ideas from one paragraph to the next
Common Mistakes That Cost Marks
- ✗Copying entire paragraphs verbatim from the course book — this gets very few marks
- ✗Answering a different question from the one asked (misreading the paper)
- ✗Extremely short answers — writing 50 words for a 20-mark question
- ✗Submitting without the assignment covering form attached
- ✗Leaving question numbers unmarked — the tutor cannot tell which answer is for which question
- ✗Irrelevant padding — writing a lot without addressing the actual question
Program-Wise Assignment Writing Guide
Assignment expectations differ by program level. Here is what you need to know for your specific program:
Matric (9th & 10th)
Writing Tip: Answer concisely from the textbook. For 10-mark questions, write 200–300 words. Short questions need 1–2 sentences each. Include relevant headings.
F.A / I.COM / F.Sc
Writing Tip: For language courses (Urdu, English), paraphrase rather than copy. For mathematics and science, show complete working steps. Copying textbook paragraphs verbatim gets minimal marks.
BA / Associate Degree
Writing Tip: Associate Degree papers include analytical questions that require your own argument supported by textbook evidence. Aim for 400–600 words per long question. Cite specific unit numbers from the course book.
BS Programs (4-Year)
Writing Tip: BS level papers demand critical thinking beyond textbook memorisation. Include relevant examples, current events where appropriate, and structured arguments with introductions and conclusions.
B.Ed (ODL Programs)
Writing Tip: B.Ed assignments often include reflective practice questions — write about your own classroom experience and connect it to educational theory. Workshop attendance is mandatory and adds to your total marks.
MA / MSc / Masters
Writing Tip: Masters level work must demonstrate research awareness. Quote from the course book but also integrate real-world examples. Reference any secondary sources you use. Tutors at this level penalise vague or unsupported answers heavily.
